Slenderman

The Slender Man is a fictional internet urban legend that originated on the Something Awful forums in June 2009, created by artist Eric Knudsen under the username “Victor Surge” as part of a Photoshop contest to generate paranormal images.
He is depicted as an unnaturally tall, slender figure with a featureless face, pale skin, and often wearing a dark suit, sometimes with long arms or tentacles emerging from his back.
The character’s origins are rooted in a series of edited photographs of children, with the figure inserted into the background, which quickly went viral.

The legend rapidly evolved beyond its creator’s initial vision, with online communities adding their own interpretations, leading to a rich, decentralized mythology.
Slender Man is associated with the abduction and disappearance of children, often luring them into the woods, and is sometimes linked to psychological effects like paranoia, nosebleeds, and nightmares, referred to as “Slender sickness”.
His motives remain vague and undefined, allowing for a wide range of interpretations, and he has become a prominent figure in internet folklore, inspiring numerous creepypasta stories, video games like Slender: The Arrival and Slender: The Eight Pages, and the found footage series Marble Hornets.

The legend gained notoriety for its real-world impact, most notably in May 2014, when two 12-year-old girls, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, stabbed their classmate Payton Leutner 19 times in the woods near Waukesha, Wisconsin, claiming they were attempting to appease Slender Man to gain his favor or become his “proxies”.
The victim survived after crawling to a path and being found by a bicyclist.
The girls were tried as adults, with Geyser being diagnosed with childhood-onset schizophrenia and both pleading not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
The case highlighted the potential dangers of online mythology and the psychological vulnerability of young individuals.

The Slender Man has also been linked to other incidents, including a reported arson in Florida and an attack on a mother in Ohio, both allegedly motivated by the belief that actions were necessary to please the entity.
Scholars have drawn connections between Slender Man and ancient folklore, particularly tales of fairies, noting similarities in their otherworldly nature, elusive motives, and association with the wilderness and child abduction.
Despite being a fictional creation, the legend has become a significant cultural phenomenon, demonstrating the power of internet-driven myths to influence real-world behavior.
